The Larry English L.E.A.D. Foundation

Leading Education to Athletes for their Dreams

Our Mission

The Larry English L.E.A.D. Foundation is committed to creating opportunities to broaden the mindset of youth athletes by empowering them with advanced programming in education, professional development and mentoring to help them achieve their dreams.

Few people who dream of becoming paid professional athletes, coaches,or sports officials beat the odds and make a full-time living from professional athletics. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a .00565% chance that student athletes will become a professional player. In addition, those athletes who are part of the less than one percent that are able to play at a professional level often have short careers with little job security.

What many sports fans and young athletes don’t realize are the difficulties that can occur during the transition into a career after sports if athletes have pursued their sports to the detriment of their general education. The Foundation’s purpose is to integrate and elevate student athlete’s educational and professional dreams, through various programming for middle school and high school students. Students will learn to prioritize their education and work to improve their academic success therefore ensuring the success of their professional lives. Critical to the students’ forward progress, is the long-term commitment and support of at least one of the students’ parents or guardians. By the time our students have graduated from high school they will have developed because of the advantages provided. In addition, they will have cultivated essential skills and relationships, which will help LEAD them towards their future goals.

English is the first defensive player to win the award twice and one of only two Huskies to be named first team All-MAC three times (2006, 2007, 2008). In 2007, Larry earned the MAC's Vern Smith Leadership Award (league MVP), becoming the second consecutive Huskie to win this award, and was a consensus first team All-MAC choice.  Larry was the first defensive player to win the Vern Smith Award since the first year of the award in 1982.  In 2008, MAC News, Media Association and Sporting News named Larry the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. He was the nation's career leader in sacks (31.5), sack yardage (220) and tackles for loss yards (283), ranks second in tackles for loss (63).  Larry broke the NIU career record for quarterback sacks with two in the Kent State game.  He was named MAC Player of the week two times in one year. He is the highest NFL draft pick in NIU history. His 31.5 career sacks are a school record.

At a young age with the support of his mother, Susan, Larry made the commitment to achieve in the classroom as well as in sports.  His coaches, professors and teachers throughout his academic career have said Larry embodies the true meaning of a student-athlete. Recognizing the importance of academics in his preparation for success, Larry wants to inspire other up and coming athletes to do the same. Larry and Susan launched The Larry English L.E.A.D. (Leading Education to Athletes for Their Dreams) Foundation in 2010. Working in the San Diego and Chicago communities, the organization’s mission is to create opportunities that broaden the mindset of youth athletes by empowering them with advanced programming in education, professional development and mentoring, all of which will help better prepare them for future goals on and off the field.

Playing one of toughest positions in a 3-4 defense scheme, the Chargers’ top pick in the 2009 NFL Draft (number 16 overall) is Larry English.

He is coming off an impressive rookie season where played all 16 games, had 34 tackles and two sacks and tied for team leader in quarterback hits.
None of that however, is surprising about English. While at Northern Illinois University he won the Vern Smith Leadership Award for top player in the Mid-American Conference twice, which puts him in an elite class because only one other defensive player in MAC history has won the award.

I had time to catch up with English and discover why he’s just as impressive off the field.

A self proclaimed foodie, who enjoys eating and spending time with family and friends, English would be modeling or acting if he wasn’t one of the top players in the NFL.

An athlete since a young age, Larry cannot remember a time where he wasn’t interested in playing football. when I asked him what is the Most Enjoyable Part Of being an NFL Player?

He said “Just realizing how fortunate you are to be living out your childhood dream. Many people in life don’t get the opportunity to do what they love! And I respect my positioning and really enjoy the fact that I have an opportunity on a daily basis to impact lives in a positive manner and that means a lot to me.”

Larry is using the opportunity he has been given to make his community a better place. In 2010 Larryand his mother Susan Englih started the Larry English L.E.A.D. Foundation ( Leading Education to Athletes for their Dreams).  The foundation’s purpose is to create opportunities to broaden the mindset of youth athletes by empowering them with advanced programming in education, professional development and mentoring to help them achieve their dreams which will help “LEAD” them towards their future goals.

He has several programs he plans to institute such as:

The P.R.O. Program- Personally Responsible for Your Outcome
San Diego, CA/Chicago, IL

The P.R.O. Program will work within the San Diego and Chicago communities as a support system to selected student athletes and work to improve the academic success and shape young athletes into well rounded and productive citizens through academic tutoring, professional development workshops, field trips and mentoring opportunities.

Speak English - San Diego
This program is designed for high school student athletes to increase their confidence and skill level when speaking. Larry along with volunteer media and PR professionals will train the student athletes on interviewing skills. There will be a filming process at the beginning and end to evaluate their progress. The coaching staff and guidance counselors will be a part of the selection process in addition to an application provided by the L.E.A.D. Foundation.

Larry English L.E.A.D. Scholarship
L.E.A.D. will focus its efforts in Aurora, Illinois through a partnership with Marmion Academy to grant scholarships to exceptional athletes who are of lower income families and would not otherwise be able to attend.
Marmion Academy, a Catholic-Benedictine college preparatory high school for young men, is a community dedicated to spiritual formation, academic excellence and leadership development. Founded in 1933, Marmion is conducted by the Benedictine Priests and Brothers of Marmion Abbey and is situated on a scenic 325 acre campus in Aurora, Illinois. www.marmion.org

Larry English Team52 Health Initiative
The Larry English L.E.A.D. Foundation has formed a health initiative with Palomar Pomerado Health in San Diego to increase the awareness for the issues of living with asthma and to provide free asthma testing for children in the San Diego area in order to encourage those who have been diagnosed to take preventative measures to control the disease.

  • Partner with PPH to create a series of interactive web games tailored to teach youth about asthma and how they can excel in life with the disease
  • Partner with PPH and appropriate schools to coordinate a series of “It’s Okay to Breathe and Play” health lectures. These lectures will be led by Dr. K, a PPH affiliated pulmonologist and NFL player Larry English and will discuss the importance of nutrition and other topics that will help youth achieve a healthy lifestyle. A partnership with Youth Fitness Magazine will help promote this campaign
  • Partner with PPH to coordinate events for NFL player Larry English to hand out gifts and visit with patients at PPH during the holidays.
  • Partnership with PPH Express Care and Albertsons/Sav-on Pharmacy

Larry will make signing appearances to raise awareness for PPH Express Care Clinics. These PPH Express Care locations are as follows:

Albertsons/Sav-On Pharmacy
1509 East Valley Parkway
Escondido, CA 92027
760.746.1562

Albertsons/Sav-On Pharmacy
14340 Penasquitos Drive
San Diego, CA 92129

  • Partnering with PPH Express Care inhaler program, The Larry English L.E.A.D. Foundation and inhaler manufactures will provide 10 children with free inhalers and medication for 1 year. Children will be awarded the free inhalers through an essay writing contest about asthma and nutrition.
